Markets, marketing and marketing activities

A market is any situation where buyers and sellers interact to trade: a stall, a shop, a website. Marketing is everything a business does to find out what customers want and get it to them at a profit. Paper 1 asks what a market is, and which activity counts as marketing, almost every year.

By the end of this page you can

  • Explain what a market is and how price is set in one
  • Tell perfect competition, oligopoly and monopoly apart
  • Name the marketing activities and say what each does
  • Explain social media and integrated marketing

Goals tick themselves off as you try the activities below.

Even a vegetable stall does marketing: it chooses what to sell, sets prices and lays out the goods to attract buyers.
