What disease costs a society

Disease costs far more than one sick person. When crops, livestock or workers fall ill, a whole country pays: in lives, in money and in damage to the environment.

By the end of this page you can

  • Give examples of plant, animal and human diseases that cost Caribbean countries
  • Sort the costs of disease into social, economic and environmental
  • Follow a crop disease from one field to the economy
  • Define epidemic, pandemic, endemic, productivity and quarantine
  • Discuss the social and economic effects of a disease outbreak

Lethal yellowing, a disease spread by insects, killed millions of coconut palms across Jamaica and the wider Caribbean.
