Remember

  • A pictograph uses pictures; the key says what each picture stands for.
  • Tally marks go in bundles of five: four down, and the fifth crosses them. Count in fives, then the ones.
  • Read a bar by looking across from its top to the numbers on the side.
  • Check what the scale counts in. A bar halfway between 10 and 20 shows 15.
  • A line graph shows how something changes. Uphill means it went up.
  • A pie chart is the whole group. Half the circle is ½, or 50%.
  • Mean: add them all up, then share the total equally: divide by how many numbers there are. Median: put the numbers in order; the median is the one in the middle. Mode: the number that comes up most. Range: take the smallest number away from the largest.
